#VOFF 3 – ‘Be Afraid. Be VERY Afraid’ – sees cult movie actor Udo Kier join the jury; winners will be announced at the Raindance Film Festival Closing Night Gala
Zürich – September 11, 2014 – Viewster (http://www.viewster.com/), the only online video service with its own film festival, today announced the opening of public voting for the third edition of the Viewster Online Film Fest (#VOFF), which runs from 11 – 25 September 2014. The winners of the #VOFF 3 will be announced at the Closing Night Gala of the London Raindance Film Festival.
#VOFF 3 ‘Be Afraid. Be VERY Afraid’ is the latest edition of the global online festival, and it celebrates ‘genre’ creations – pulling together influences from science fiction, horror/paranormal and fantasy. The #VOFF attracts television and film producers, visionaries and enthusiasts from around the world for two weeks of short films, features, web series and teasers. Viewster has a strong community who are eager to share and support quality content, making the #VOFF the ideal platform to showcase new work. The trailer for #VOFF 3 can be viewed here.
#VOFF 3 has already exceeded growth of the previous festivals; out of the (insert number) of applicants, 500 films have been accepted from 60 countries worldwide, including the USA, the UK, France, Brazil, Australia, India and Canada. Festival participants have submitted short films, features and series to compete for cash awards totalling $100,000 USD. Following the public voting phase for the shortlist, the #VOFF jury will decide on the winners of the festival.
In celebration of the ‘genre’ theme, ‘cult’ movie actor Udo Kier, who has appeared in over 200 films, has joined the #VOFF 3 jury. Kier has worked with some of the world’s greatest directors, including Andy Warhol for Flesh for Frankenstein and Blood for Dracula, and Lars Van Trier for the likes of Epidemic, Dogville and Melancholia. He has also starred in mainstream box-office titles such as Blade and Armageddon.
He joins the other jurors, who are US independent film producer Ted Hope (21 Grams, American Splendor, Martha Marcy May Marlene), Finnish director Timo Vuorensola (whose own ‘genre’ indie success includes sci-fi festival hit Iron Sky) and award-winning German actress Nora Tschirner (Keinorhansen).
The winners will be announced at the Raindance Film Festival Closing Night Gala October 5, which is being held in partnership with Viewster. The festival, which celebrates the best of indie filmmaking, is in its 22nd year and will close with the award-winning Dutch noir film Wolf.
Viewster is running two social media competitions for viewers of #VOFF 3 through Twitter for a trip to London for two with passes to the Raindance Film Festival and Facebook to attend the Closing Night Gala party in central London. The giveaways are open worldwide.
Kai Henniges, CEO of Viewster, said: “Viewster is all about discovering creative talent and sharing originality. The Viewster Online Film Fest (#VOFF) is proving a huge success with film creators and fans alike, and it is a great platform for filmmakers to show their work, win prize money to fund future projects, and build a global fan base through the Viewster community and social channels.
“The ‘genre’ theme of this latest #VOFF fits with our audience perfectly – Viewster as a platform has always championed the inventive and the imaginative in film and TV content. It is great to have Udo on board as a juror, bringing with him his pedigree in genre films and real fan-boy appeal. The theme of this #VOFF also reflects a real trend in our viewing habits for the niche to move into the mainstream. We eagerly watch sci-fi and fantasy epics and TV series on our screens, and are happy to mix our horror with some comedy. ‘Genre’ content is hot right now, and no longer the preserve of geeks.”
Udo Kier added: “I’m sure I will love the Viewster Online Film Festival. I’m looking forward to see and judge up-and-coming creature creators from all over the world which will be mostly films that will be hard to see anywhere else than on this Viewster Film Fest. And give some of them the chance to get a huge exposure through the online festival.”
The latest iteration of the festival follows the success of #VOFF2: ‘Relationship Status: It’s Complicated, which attracted around 500,000 online visitors and was also the most social festival to-date with tens of millions of interactions with festival content across social media. The top prize was awarded to Ali Zare Ghanatnowi of Iran, for his animated short film, Dad’s Fragile Doll.
Video fans can join the Viewster community to watch, comment, share and vote for their favourite entries now and help identify the finalists for the jury session straight from Viewster’s platform. Finalists will be announced on viewster.com.
